We took a ride on the Solomon T on a recent trip to Bald Head Island. Captain Bert and his friend, Jim, came over to the BHI marina to pick up my husband, two small kids, and me. From the minute they jumped off the boat to the minute we came back we were all enraptured. The boat is gorgeous and comfortable. Solid. Captain Bert knows pretty much everything there is to know about the area, the history, the water, and the wildlife. Jim did too! They were friendly and took pains to talk about things the kids could relate to. Even had props! My kids are talking about charts, buoys, sea turtles, and "the head" today. We had and absolutely delightful evening with two genuinely charming, talented, rather gallant gentlemen, that was the hightlight of our week. And it was a good week! Do not delay. Call Captain Bert and arrange your tour.

If you visit Southport, this is the way to see the town. The Captain of the Solomon T, a 1938 Original Shrimp Boat (One of two left in Southport) and his wife, were most generous and informative.
We called ahead of time and asked for a sunset cruise, as we have two photographers in the family. We were delighted that he could accommodate us, and made arrangements for the next day at 7:25pm. We met at the pier and climbed on board. During our entire journey, our Captain was very professional, courteous and informative. He catered specifically to our interests, and went where WE wanted to go. He let my 12 year old son drive the boat, and let me climb out on the front to get a good picture of him driving. We caught magnificent photographs the dolphins out in the river, and heart stopping pictures of the lighthouse at sunset. You can have a total of 6 people in your party, and we spent and hour and a half learning about the local history, maritime history and legends. After getting back to shore, we went across the street and wrapped up our evening with some ice cream and sat out on the porch in the rocking chairs. Well worth the money, do not miss this! I cannot say enough about how great this experience was.

Took a trip to the Wilmington area this past May and going on one positive review that I read on Trip Advisor, decided to book a Cape Fear River tour with Captain Bert Felton on the Solomon T out of Southport. What a great decision! My friend and I were the only passengers and we were treated to wonderful views and history of the area. Captain Bert and his wife Becky are very knowledgeable about birding and we saw Ospreys in flight and orange beaked oystercatchers nesting on the beach. This is a very affordable and pleasant way to see the river, I highly recommend this tour.

Here is a chance for a relaxing boat trip on the Cape Fear River in a vintage "Harkers Island" fishing boat with the delightful Captain Bert Felton and his wife and first mate Becky. They are both knowledgable about the area's history, maritime and pirate lore, boat building and navigation, and anything else related to Southport. The tour can be tailored to each party's interests, but be sure to take advantage of their familiarity with the birds of Battery Island, an Audubon sanctuary in the Cape Fear. They even supply binoculars for use on board. Captain Felton allowed us to set the day and time. The $25 a person price tag for 1 1/2 to 2 hours was a bargain for such a delightful and educational experience. We have lived in the Wilmington area for seven years and did not know about this hidden gem. This was our first trip on the Solomon T. but will not be our last. You can visit Capt. Felton at the Southport harbor next to Fishy Fishy restaurant or check out his website. A perfect part of your Southport or Oak Island vacation or a fun day trip from Wilmington or Myrtle Beach. Don't miss it!
